CHEAT SHEET  – Is Your Website’s Home Page Really the Entrance to Your Site?

A common assumption many business owners make is that everybody coming to their web site enters the web site on the Home page.

After all, in a brick and mortar, everyone enters thru the shop’s main door. Right?

Unfortunately, this is one of many important differences between offline and online.

The reality is that in many instances, few web site visitors enter by way of the home page. Many enter by clicking on the results pages displayed by search engines such as Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

As a business owner, this can be a dangerous assumption.

This Cheat Sheet offers THREE important points that YOU need to know about your web site traffic and where they are entering your web site!

Keywords and Keyphrases – especially Keyphrases – are an extremely part of creating an effective web site.

The nitty-gritty here is that if you don’t know which Keyphrases folks are using to get to your web site, you don’t know what keyphrases you may be missing or which ones you should be expanding.

Amazingly enough, there is an easy way to find out which Keyphrases folks are using to get to your web site.

This Cheat Sheets offers a Three Step Process to understanding and evaluating your web sites Keyphrases.

CHEAT SHEET – Web Site Statistics – Teach Yourself How to Read Them

Web site statistics are something that EVERY business owner should be checking at least once a week and preferably more often.

In spite of this, I’ve worked with a frightening number of offline business owners — with web sites — who don’t even know how to access their web site’s statistics.

I ask them about their site stats and their eyes glaze over or roll up into their heads… bless their hearts.

I know that they know, in detail, who comes into their offline businesses, where their referrals are coming from, what folks are looking at in their brick and mortar.

Needless to say, this information about their online business would be equally valuable, if they would take the time to understand it.

So, for any of your who don’t know and who might be reading this, this Cheat Sheet is a step by step strategy to take control!   ;-)

CHEAT SHEET  – Add Google Analytics to your Web Statistics Arsenal

Different web statistics programs track different information.

Most web hosting companies provide statistics of some type. Sometimes however, a web site owner may want additional information about a web site or certain of its pages.

Page Tagging Statistics are an excellent example of this option.  Google Analytics is probably the premier example of Page Tagging Statistics currently available.

This Cheat Sheet explains the statistical information for a website that is now provided by Google Analytics!

CHEAT SHEET  – Preparing Product IMAGES: Be Sure to Make Each Image the Proper Size for its Usage

One of the more confusing issues with displaying graphics / images on the internet is understanding the concept of how to size images properly.

There are actually TWO issues involved with properly sizing web images:

  • Using the appropriate resolution
  • Resizing the image to the size suitable for the circumstances (for example, the size of the available display area)

CHEAT SHEET – Preparing Product IMAGES: Be Sure to Use the Correct File Type

Graphic File Types differ according to HOW they present the visual image technically

Each Image File Type uses specific technology to create a visual image in a unique and proprietary way. In a simple analogy, it is like the difference between a fat stick of sidewalk chalk and a crayon. They both may be a light blue color, but the visual effect is based on the surface each is used on and exactly how it is applied.

CHEAT SHEET – Preparing Product IMAGES: Be Sure to Organize Your System

Preparing product images is usually a multi-step process, especially if you are starting with raw images – taking pictures with a camera (digital or otherwise) or scanning the images.

Often times, due to the realities of time management and life in general, you will be working on a set of images of a period of several days, or even weeks or months.

As a result, it can be very difficult to remember exactly what you have already done and what you still need to do. This confusion can easily lead to disaster, either real or imagined.

Recently I had a good friend call me, absolutely crazed because she had just spent several days, spread out over a couple of weeks, preparing a large set of images for her online store. After an unavoidable delay of several days while life happened, she was ready to upload the 400+ images… only to discover to her horror that they were gone!

Somehow, they were no longer on her hard drive! Needless to say, she was in shock!

After several panicked minutes, she decided to give up and she moved on to the next item on her To Do list… Imagine her surprise when she logged on to her website and discovered ALL of the 400+ pictures there, already uploaded — by her — a few days earlier!

As best she can figure, she must have uploaded them to the server and then deleted them from her computer, but she doesn’t remember doing any of it. As it turns out, the images were not lost, but she had a rough half hour during which she thought that all of that hard work was gone forever.

The fact of the matter is, this type of thing happens more often that you would think.

Seemingly simple online tasks can actually be very intricate, requiring multiple steps.

CHEAT SHEET – HOT Descriptions are the Key to Online Selling Success!

A common error that an Offline Retailer may make with his or her web site is to rush through the process of listing products and services on their web sites and then wonder why they aren’t selling anything. Certainly, pictures are a must have to sell online, but the reality is that written product descriptions are necessary as well.

In fact, online, the WRITTEN product description is important because the information it provides is used BOTH by the humans visiting the site AND the search engines evaluating the site!

CHEAT SHEET – Product Descriptions: Good, Better, Best

While many folks seem to think that there has never been anything else like selling on the internet, the fact of the matter is that Sears Roebuck and Company did pretty much the same thing in the United States in the last quarter of the nineteenth century – they sold products based solely on product images and written product descriptions!

Think about it…

Mail Order is a low tech selling mechanism which,
like the current Internet, is limited to
product images and written product descriptions.

The early Sears catalogs were, in their day, pretty much where we are now with selling online…

OVERCOMING THE CUSTOMER”S FEARS ABOUT PURCHASING

Well written, detailed, Product Descriptions are one of the most effective ways to overcome purchaser trepidation.
