What is SEO… and why do you need to know?

SEO stands for *Search Engine Optimization*. It refers to the methods and tactics that make any kind of web site (including blogs) attractive to the Search Engines and their spiders/bots/indexing software.

As I have mentioned may times before, there are only three ways to get traffic to a web site:

    1)    Typing in a URL

    2)    Clicking on a Link that leads to the site

    3)    Through a Search Engine search

As you can see, Method #3 is directly attributable to Search Engines, and Method #2 is likely to involve the Search Engines in one way or another! As a result, the Search Engines are a major concern for anyone who is serious about getting traffic, human or otherwise, to a web site.

At its simplest, making a web site attractive to Search Engines and their spiders/bots, involves making sure that the web site’s structure and its contents are accessible to the Search Engines.

A Search Engine spider /bot enters the web site and collects, parses, and stores that data to facilitate fast and accurate information retrieval. This process is called Indexing.

SEO makes sure that all of the pertinent data is accessible… if the Search Engine spider/bot can’t access the information, it can’t index it!
