Short Report – Disaster-Proof Your Computer’s Data

Disaster-Proof Your Computer’s Data

When protecting an online business, there are generally two main categories of data to be considered:  web site data and computer data. At this point in technology the data on a computer is usually residing on a hard drive.

This Short Report deals with computer data on a hard drive.

As any business owner with an online business knows, we all have important information stored in a variety of places and maintained in a variety of formats and each situation offers its own unique challenges.

Last week, I woke up one morning to find that my desktop computer wouldn’t start. All I got was TWO blank screens (I run a dual monitor setup). Everything had seemed fine the night before… well, anyway, I am sure you get the picture!

Now, after a week at the computer hospital, Freddie, my computer, is back and I am in the process of re-installing software and getting everything up and running to my satisfaction.

I take a lot of precautions, and this time I was extremely lucky. The only casualty was my email archives, inconvenient yes, but certainly not a devastating loss. More importantly, I have taken that lesson to heart and I am taking precautions against this happening in the future. ;-) My mama didn’t raise a fool! LOL…

Cheat Sheet – Why .TXT Files are your Friends When Disaster-proofing Your Business

Plain text files are one of the unsung heroes of information backup. You really should consider adding them to your Disaster-Proofing arsenal!

Let’s start with explaining exactly WHAT a plain text file is:

  • .txt is a filename extension for files consisting of text usually containing very little formatting (ex: no bolding or italics).

NOTE – This means that you can save computer codes, such a html, javascript, or php without messing up the code. ;-)

  •  A text file exists within a computer file system, but CAN be printed out on paper if a hard copy is desired.
  • The precise definition of the .txt format is not specified, but typically matches the format accepted by the system terminal or any simple text editor software.
  •  Files with the .txt extension can easily be read or opened by any program that reads text and, for that reason, are considered universal or platform independent.

This last issue is important because it means that you can access a plain text file (with the .txt extension) from either a Windows machine or a Mac machine.

Cheat Sheet – Disaster-proof Strategies for Organizing Your Programs

Recently, my computer crashed and needed to go to the Computer Hospital. I am fortunate to be a customer for a REALLY good information technology customer service company, Kentucky Trade.

http://kytrade.com

They built my desktop for me and sold me my laptop and have kept both of them running for a number of years.

This time, it was Freddie, the desktop that had the problems.

As it turned out, Freddie needed a new video card (this was why he had crashed) and a new DVD burner (I had known about this but had been dragging my heels about getting it fixed).

The big surprise of the day, however, was the need for a complete Windows re-install! ;-(

This meant that I would have to reinstall all of my other computer programs… what a PITA!

In my case, it is usually more time consuming than traumatic, simply because I have planned ahead for this eventuality.

If you think about it, programs needing to be reinstalled generally come in two flavors:

  • Programs on hard media, such as disks
  • Programs in digital format only

Here is how I handle each type of program….

Cheat Sheet – Strategies to Disaster-proof Your Fonts!

One of the more fun aspects of computers, word-processing, AND graphics, is the ability to use Fonts (pretty alphabet styles)

Computers come with a large number of Fonts pre-loaded and many of us find Fonts online and add them to our systems. In fact, just last week I pointed one of my Coaching clients to a package of 10,00 fonts available for either personal or commercial use. What a treasure trove!

Oddly enough, this abundance of available Fonts can lead to problems if you use Fonts to promote your business.

You may have run into one of the following problems…
