EXCERPT

One of the biggest traps to taking an Offline business Online, is assuming that Online is just like Offline, except that it is on the Internet. In fact, there are MANY important and crucial differences, including (but not limited to) how people interact online, what makes an Online business different from its competitors, and how customers and clients find an Online business.

There is a simple solution to avoiding this pitfall – remind yourself that the REAL world (Offline) and the VIRTUAL world (Online) are different universes. Approach putting an Offline business Online as if you were opening a branch office in another country – or maybe more accurately – in another world.

Yes, there are many similarities, but the danger lies in focusing on the similarities and not understanding the importance of identifying and acting on the differences.

Let us take some time here to learn the lay of the land in this new world.

On the Internet, relationships are based around mutual interests and needs… think millions of tiny villages based on hobbies, sports, habits, and most especially, problems!

The *Experts* predicted that we would become alienated beings, with little interaction or personal connectedness among those Online. Amazingly enough, this is far from true. Just the opposite — the Internet has become a Personality driven communications medium. It is all about building relationships.

In the Online world, successful businesses are built on the foundation of service, rather than sales. There is so much competition, you can rarely compete effectively, based on price alone, so you need to provide valuable information, make products easy to buy, and build relationships. Fortunately, the Internet offers a myriad of ways to accomplish these goals… if you are willing to think outside of the box!
